Basically. (@fernham @senorita_ex)
Just realized Ariel gained her “independence” (from her father… the king) by getting married (to a prince). Ruled by men. DAMN! At 16 too..
In the original story she was actually wanting to be human so that she could have a Christian soul and find eternal life, because although mermaids live for hundreds of years, when they die they cease to exist and turn into sea foam.
She saves the prince and trades her voice for legs, and there’s a rival girl and all that, but in the original story she is doing it because if the prince loves her back a part of his soul will go into her and she’ll gain eternal life. But in the original story the prince falls in love with a rival girl, and a condition of her gaining legs is that if he marries someone else she’ll die by the next dawn. The sea witch gives her a dagger and says if she kills the prince and lets his blood pour on her feet she can become a mermaid again.
She can’t kill him so she leaps out his window into the ocean and becomes sea foam. But then she realizes, as sea foam, she’s still sentient, and other sea foam creatures, called “daughters of the air”, tell her she’s become a spirit, and if she does good deeds she will eventually be able to go to heaven.
The original story was actually pretty feminist and a cautionary tale about the dangers of giving up things that are important to you for love, and how you can reach those things on your own.
